About Elkin Music

Past, Present, Future

The Elkin name in the music publishing industry dates back more than a century to 1903 when Robert Elkin established Elkin & Co., Ltd., a classical sheet music publishing firm, in London. A family-owned business for generations, the Elkin company and its catalog were sold to Novello & Co. in the 1960s by Robert's grandson Bill Elkin. Soon after the sale of the publishing firm, Bill and his wife Anne opened William Elkin Music Services, a retail and wholesale music distribution business. From its beginnings in the dining room of Deacon House in Brundall, near Norwich, the new company quickly grew to become the largest of its kind in the U.K.

In 1992, Bill and Anne realized their long-time ambition of spending most of their time in the United States. By now, their son Richard had become a partner in the Norwich firm, assuming the operations there, and the decision was made to open a new company in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The expansion of their business interests into the United States marked the birth of Elkin Music International, and the family hired Tim Sloan to manage the company from its inception. The mission of this new firm was to help make international music publishers' catalogs — both printed music and books on music — more readily available to U.S. musicians and to facilitate the acquisition of American music publications for the Elkin business in Norwich. In 1995, the Elkins returned to Great Britain for health reasons and sold the Florida company to Dr. Sloan. After more than a decade of operating in sunny South Florida, he relocated home and business to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, in 2005.
